My review is on the older version of "Scientology: a New Slant on Life." This is really a collection of articles by LRH -- each chapter is a different article. I believe it is intended to give an overview of Scientology philosophy while imparting some useful data. The 2007 "Basics" version is different. It is also comprised of LRH articles but there are more of them and they are organized into sections to reflect different aspects of Scientology. Some of the articles are the same and some are different from the earlier version. BUT, MY most favorite article is not in the new version. That is "Happiness and Interest" in which Ron talks about the need to continue to create interest in whatever you are doing. He says "...the clue to happiness is being interested in life. People's happiness is as great as they can create it." For me, this is the best chapter in the book and it is not in the new version.

While the standard intro Scientology book is "The Fundamentals of Thought", I found it was too difficult for some newbies to get through. "New Slant on Life" was a great solution.

A great Scientology intro book

Pros and Cons (optional)

Pros
When I was on staff, this was my "go to" book for people who were curious about Scientology. The short chapters are easy to digest, short (great for people with short attention spans), and provide a nice sampler of basic Scientology tenets.
Cons
When "The Basics" were re-issued, there were apparently massive differences between the version I was using back in the 80s and the new version. A whole lot of great essays were left out of the new one.

If you have any consideration that you might have difficulty understanding any Scientology book, this one's for you. It is so easy to read and so enjoyable. (just like reading a novel). But while reading you can have the most amazing realizations about life. That's what happened to me anyway.

This book is a nice synthesis of some key essays that are very easy to understand, and thus this book is particularly suitable for anyone new to the subject. It focuses on the everyday issues in the lives of people, such as work, family and honesty, as well as the core spiritual precepts of Scientology.

This was my favorite of the introductory books and the one I give to new people. It is simple and yet the data is so useful to life. It just makes sense.
