Pros and Cons (optional)

Pros
This is a non-religious, but very spiritual book, with common sense laws of life. I am happier because of it. There is a really cool DVD which goes along with it.
Cons
Not enough people have this book.

I like those rules as I found out they really help to live together with other people in harmony. The rule about Flourish and Posper is a really great and helpful advise. With this one alone I could handle a lot suppressive situations!

Although this book contains the basic tenets of how to be decent, it is used as a marketing tool for corporate Scientology, an organization that fails to adhere to most of the tenets outlined in the book.

In addition, the Way to Happiness recommends, as Precept 19, "try not to do things to others that you would not like them to do with you", and Precept 20, "Try to treat others as you would want them to treat you." Sounds good, and not in conflict with most spiritual ethical guidelines.

However, this conflicts with the Code of Honor for Scientologists, specifically Precept 12, namely "Never fear to hurt another in a just cause". The ethical and philosophical problems with the possibility for margin of error in determining what a "just" cause is aside, this is a part of the Code of Honor of a Scientologist. The Way to Happiness is thus misleading if one takes it to represent all Scientology values.

Corporate Scientology violates many of the common sense precepts in the Way to Happiness.

For this reason, I would not recommend it.

I was around when The Way To Happiness (TWTH) was originally released. At that time, it was a small soft cover booklet and 20 or so of these could be bundled for distribution. And, distributed they were! I knew the person who took charge of whole sale distribution of the booklets at that time; it was a big deal and quite effective in enlightening people in many walks of life.

The information in the booklet was simple and easy to understand. It also covered the happiness points that folks could apply not only to oneself but to others to help them.

I suppose this continued to be done through the years; I wouldn't know for sure as I was off on other project(s). But somewhere along the line, the booklet became a hard cover book with dust jacket. This is not the best format for broad distribution in the least.

Coupled with the actual The Way to Happiness materials and the Happiness Rundown, I ended up feeling pretty confident in the area. It's simple ... yet powerful stuff.
